Communication Communication happens whether at work, communicating with employees, suppliers or customers, or at home, communicating with family and friends. Communication involves sending and receiving messages. This paper will discuss verbal and nonverbal communication, the challenges of communicating between genders and across cultures, and how to communicate effectively in diverse environments. Verbal and Nonverbal Communications According to Merriam-Webster (2012), communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. People communicate through body language, tone of voice, words, empathy, and active listening. A common mistake people make is to focus on the delivery of information, rather than how it is received. Communication has to be two-way. Verbal communication focuses on how words and language are used and nonverbal communication refers to message components other than words that generate meaning (Engleberg & Wynn, 2011). Nonverbal communication includes those important but unspoken signals that individuals exhibit, specifically: carriage/posture, appearance, listening, eye contact, hand gestures, and facial expressions. The In-Tuition (2009) website says nonverbal communication account for 55% of communication. Verbal communication includes rate, volume, pitch as well as articulation and pronunciation. Communication involves sending and receiving a message that is understood clearly. When messages are sent and received, not only do we speak, but we also send non-verbal messages. So if you have something important or sensitive to say, meet the other person face to face. You can check body language, to see how they are reacting to your message.
