Although, many songs they play are religious based on the Catholic ways. They also play Hispanic types of music that is generally used with the flutes, drums, and rattles. Guitars, drums and flutes are popular instruments they use to entertain with their family and friends. Most of the homes owned by Catholics are decorated with a Christmas tree hung with elegant decorations like candy canes or crystal balls. Many people might have something that represents the nativity when baby Jesus was born.
This fairytale ending is easily accepted by many, not because they believe it is feasible, but because they wish it was. Seeing Jakie reconcile with his father and still become a Broadway star gives hope to someone with the same experiences. The Jazz Singer (1927) may be an old movie, but its portrayal of religion still holds true today. Secular music is still looked down upon by many conservative believers, many communities still have deep religious roots and although the reasons why certain traditions or holidays exist are not known they are still practiced. Finally religion has a huge impact on the personal lives or many people, whether they are being controlled by it or fighting against it.
Rituals and festivals played a crucial role in traditional European life throughout the modern period. Rituals, such as charivari (“riding the stang”) allowed for the community to join together and have fun, teach lessons, and even make political statements. Festivals such as carnival, and that on midsummer night’s eve allowed for the community to relax, release their burdens, join together, learn from one another and, to the dismay of some, also served as a medium of spreading vices. Despite their disorderly nature, these ritualized activities actually served to reinforce traditional social values by building a sense of community, by imposing mechanisms of social control, and providing outlets for political discontent. Many rituals and festivals built community spirit and unity.
The Late Renaissance period, from 1500-1600, was a time of artistic rebirth when artists rediscovered classical (pagan) values and thinking. Subject matter prior to the Renaissance was mainly religious and concerned with helping viewers focus on heavenly things. The Renaissance saw the broadening of religion and art compared to the narrow religious perspective of medieval times. This was due to the development of Franciscan naturalism, humanism, scientific enquiry and economic prosperity, forming an ideal climate for artists to explore and express their personal creativity and values. The Renaissance was also a new era in patronage.
He “ranged freely over music, literature, art, and other subjects,” but could not agree with what was taking place at Coney Island. Critics like him who had visited the island could not deny the fun environment, but felt that when people arrived a Coney Island, they lost their mind and moral values. Not only were they concerned about human character; they were also concerned about the economy as a whole. Coney Island was changing America “from a ‘pain economy,’ where scarcity of resources demanded a struggle for subsistence, to a ‘pleasure economy,’ in which abundance was potentially available to all” (Kasson 90). People would avoid sin to be sure not to be punished by unemployment and bad economic standings, but without this fear, it was unknown what citizens of the United States would start acting like.
To the contrary, many of the businesses are still thriving. It is this comparison that Foer makes in his statement, “I kept noticing the ways that globalization had failed to diminish the game’s local culture, local blood feuds, and even local corruption. In fact, I began to suspect that globalization had actually increased the power of these local entities-and not always in such a good way” (Foer, 408). Whereas soccer is a far cry from selling coffee and donuts, it still tends to define that globalization, of some products, has failed. The mass marketing, on a global scale, of certain products still does not yield the same results as an already established business with a supportive clientele
Another way people bring excitement into their lives today, includes gambling. Gambling may be fun to many and may give them an adrenaline rush, but it does more bad than good. Over the past several years, many state governments have permitted gambling by going as far as sponsoring lotteries. They believe this will increase state revenues and keep taxes down. State governments have no business promoting gambling.
Marriage ceremony, were usually very fun and many communities in many areas recognized the collect. One of the most essential plants was maize, so the maize collect was often recognized through dancing. Usually people danced and chanted to the beats of the drum. Flow such as a constant dance was also used in many events such as the Sun dancing and the Rainfall dancing. Even shamans sometimes used dancing to call the mood to cure the tired and
Mina Mikhael Mrs. Leite HRE 3U/CI October 8, 2011 Powwow Ritual Native Americans have many rituals and ceremonies which are demonstrated through their spiritual content. The Powwow ritual is a common ritual in Native Spirituality. This ritual is done to receive a connection with others, to communicate with the physical environment, or to gather with families; done by dancing in a clockwise motion, singing together or meeting with families and friends. Often times, their rituals or ceremonies have a deeper meaning than just dancing. It helps be one with nature or to please friendly spirits (such as the sun, plants, animals, etc…).
Things that happen at parties are often random, and alcohol fueled. And this is attractive to people. The fact that it seems like nothing could have any consequences is also attractive. In the lives of those who have just gone to war, and witnessed the atrocities of war, and the new inventions that went along with WWI such as machine guns, bombs being dropped from airplanes, the use of gas, and flamethrowers, it would be nice to do something that didn't seem to have any consequences after being in a place that had nothing but consequences. It was out of place to think of consequences during the fiesta.
