Commentary Travel Writing

My piece is written in the style of my style model which is called “And So I Went To Edinburgh” which is a travel writing piece. This could either be published in a newspaper such as the “Daily Mail” or as a novel. The main focus of a travel writing piece is to inform the reader of whatever place you are talking about, without having the intentions of persuading them to visit the place. Mainly the idea is to inform them of the diversity of the place, I mentioned about some of the sights there that would be worth visiting and my journey throughout the location remembering to mention anything necessary such as hazards or dangers. Everything I mentioned was in relation to the location that I visited: South Shields. Straight away my piece goes onto describe the background towards why I decided to base my piece around this location. The use of rhetorical questions such as “Why not?” immediately poised on the reader allows them to pause and take time to think about the context and content in the piece, broadening an understanding of the context surrounding the piece. Further use of metaphorical language is added for effect which creates a realistic, effective comparison, as it is described as grabbing someone “to the bone” it creates an effect that leads the reader to believe that the extremity as to which the situation can be reached has been unravelled. Furthermore, a great deal of sensory language is used to allow the reader to develop a greater understanding of the story by mentioning aspects of it that are universally relate able. With mentions of the “smell and appearance” of the place it gives the piece a much more effective angle as the reader feels as if they know a lot more about the place as the amount of detail is great; this a good feature to have in an article as the main purpose is to inform the
