Ursula Franklin makes many powerful and compelling points, what I enjoyed most about reading her article was that she makes each one seemingly flow into the next, interlinking. In this piece of evidence I am going to discuss the points Franklin made that I really felt strongly about. One I became quite transfixed with was her opening statement, considering technology has built the house in which we live. This statement struck me immediately and made me also contemplate how technology and law not only built the house in which we live but is the house in which we live. Law and technology both dominate our lives without realisation, they are a form of power and control, this is a critical point made by Ursula Franklin. She questions to what extent we let technology influence our life? She wrote in the opening statement “technology built the house in which we all live. The house is continually being extended and remodelled. More and more of human life takes place within its walls, so that today there is hardly any human activity that does not occur within this house.” When we take the time to contemplate what a huge part of our life involves technology we then begin to see how much it really does control our lives, this can be likened to law equally. It is invisible to us, it is so deeply ingrained within each one of us we barely even realise it is there. It’s not something we consciously think about, quite like breathing. What would happen without it? Throughout most cultures it has been found that we instinctively categorise and label others, on whether we consider them in or outside groups we belong to. Ursula Franklin applies this idea to looking at technology as practice. She states a consequence of doing this links technology to culture as culture is a set of socially established practices. She goes on further to say “these practices define the practitioners
