Theory of Comfort and Application to the Intensive Care Unit Nathan J. Herrild Oakland University Theory of Comfort The middle range nursing Theory of Comfort was created by Katharine Kolcaba in the early 1990s by conducting a concept analysis of comfort from research across multiple disciplines. Kolcaba states that “comfort is defined for nursing as the satisfaction of the basic human needs for relief, ease or transcendence arising from health care situations that are stressful.” (1994, p. 1178) Her theory creates a method of measuring total comfort and establishing a framework describing the impact interventions had upon recipients with consideration of the variables influencing comfort outcomes. Relief, ease, and transcendence are three forms of comfort existing within four contexts: physical, psychospiritual, environmental, and sociocultural. Relief is defined as the state or returning to former function. Ease is described as contentment, a state conducive to performance.
Relapse model Relapse refers to a situation where the victim returns to a previous state of behavior or mental condition (Percy, 2008). Relapse supports the disease model and it is linkedclosely to the medical and psychological models. It is a constituent of the overall process, which is specific to the affected individuals. Relapse is akin to a normal event that can be handled by treatment. The relapse model coincides with a number of medical and psychological behavior models. In this model,a behavior is said to be recurrent and multifaceted.
It is very gratifying knowing you make a difference in someone else’s life. Assisting a patient overcome a devastating disease such as cancer allows you to incorporate your skills as well as provide emotional support. It is a very humbling experience when you are faced with an end of life situation and that family member turns to you and says “thank-you”. My second dimension of health is emotional wellness. Emotional wellness recognizes the awareness and acknowledgement of one’s feelings.

Examples are the Beck Depression Inventory and the Personal Experience Inventory.
