The ups and downs of learning teams Nicole Mills COM100 November 4, 2013 Alan Chapple The ups and downs of learning teams When I think of working in a team or group, I think back to high school group projects where I got stuck doing the work. Working in a team is not always easy, but the experience is worth it in the end. My first class at University of Phoenix was GEN 200 and my first experience in a learning team. I was a little resistant at first, I could not totally accept that the determination of my grade would consist of individual and team assignments. It was a little frustrating because his reasoning was that he did not know how to communicate in the team forum, but he was posting for participation in the main forum, which made me even more frustrated because each member tried to contact him. We even posted to comments he made on the main thread, no response. So we decide to proceed with the assignments without him. Of course we informed our instructor, but it was not until the last assignment that I got a call on my cell phone from this team member who had been MIA the past five weeks. I listened to what he had to say and gave my input. We addressed the group about the situation at hand and continued with our assignment. This team member agreed that he did not contribute enough to each assignment therefore he believed he did not deserve the same grade as the other team members. I believe that we did an amazing job handling this situation, we came together and always had a plan b to complete our assignments. Bringing me to the point that, “Groups work best when they have identified a clear, elevating goal that unites their problem-solving effort” (Beebe, 2013, p. 253). Leadership played a big role. It kept us on track and helped everything run as smoothly as possible despite the various situations we ran…show more content…
I do believe we would have had a better experience if we were required to complete our learning team charter in the beginning of the class rather than at the end. The charter in my eyes helps to organize the rules and regulations of the team. It also is a reference if some team members need a little reminder of what our team agreed upon. We had more of an unofficial charter, which worked for us. Other than that we did everything in our power as a team to contact our teammate, the ball was in his hands, so to speak. We were waiting for him to respond to our concerns, and when he did not we adapted accordingly. In the end we produced quality work, receiving passing grades. I also learned numerous things from my teammates and the different situations we came across. In my eyes, made this whole experience worth
