Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, in the Republic of Genoa, Italy to the son of a weaver. Columbus first went to sea as a teenager, participating in several trading voyages in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. The voyage to the island of Khios, in Greece and that was the closest he would come to Asia. Columbus first voyage into the Atlantic Ocean in 1476 he was almost killed by the French privateers off the cost of Portugal. The French burned the ship and Columbus ended up swimming to the shore of Portuguese and ended up in Lisbon, Portugal where her married Felipa Perestrello. They had one son named Diego in 1480. Columbus moved to Spain soon after his wife died. Later she had a second son who was born out of wedlock in 1488 named Fernando with a woman named Beatriz Enriquez de Arana. Columbus was rejected by the Portuguese king for a three ship voyage discovery. He took his first plan to Genoa and to Venice but was rejected there also. He went to the Spanish monarchy of Isabella and Ferdinand of Aragon, in 1486.
