Although she starts off as very stubborn, Priestly emphasises that she is a girl of many personalities including sympathetic. At the start of the play, Sheila can be seen as a spoilt airhead that gets what she pleases. She is engaged to Gerald and is happy about it but she talks rather arrogantly towards Eric and also towards Gerald. She shows her parents a lot of respect but she makes sure that no one forgets that this is her special day and no one can take this away from her. We see an example of this arrogance towards Gerald when she says ‘Go on Gerald – just you object!’, and the stage directions that it should be said with mock aggressiveness.

A reoccurring theme in the book, The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, is the theme of women being discriminated against and used by men. This theme presents itself several times in the book because the story is set in a sexist and racist society in which women were seen by men as only good for housework and sex. The protagonist of the story, Celie, starts off the book as a black girl who is taught to be compliant and to fear men, and throughout the story learns to become a woman she herself admires. The story is written in such a way that it is understandable but the exact setting of the book remains a mystery; however, the stereotypical sexist and racist society doesn’t. The book is written as letters to Celie’s God and are written in first person from her perspective.
All I ever wanted, all I ever need from her was to feel and be loved. But I guess she only feels of me, how her mother feels of her, HATE.. A mothers loves is precious, something a person can embrace everytime they feel melancholy or unwanted. A mothers hate is cruel, and when u know and feel deep down in your heart that your mother hates u, you sometimes feel not even god loves you, You feel unloved, and unwanted by people who should love you, but really don't So you're blinded when you find someone who truly loves you... I now know that someone does love me, and his name is GOD, he's loved me all along and I let the hate from my mother blind me of that. He's loved me even when I thought I hated him.., I dont know how I could ever hate the only person who's held love for me since day one.

I feel bad and sad for the victims, because a woman can’t do anything when a man punches her. “Abusers often attempt to control and isolate victims in an effort to guard the secret of abuse and because of their jealously of any attention their partners may give or receive from family, friends, or coworkers” (Gagné 19). As the time passes, women will have bruising, bleeding, and scars that will never heal. A man hits a woman probably because he wants to act “macho”. He might be drunk or he only does it because he likes it.
