Many people have witnessed the cost of rising college tuitions crush students dreams of attending the schools that they have been fantasizing about for years. Tuition for colleges has been rising for many years and it is going to keep rising. This is the reason many American’s are not even considering college. Entering in a society without education is very hard when most jobs require at least an associates degree. With the rising tuition education is going to be very hard to acquire.
So, how could someone pay for it? Scholarships are becoming increasingly harder to receive because more people require them to get into the school of their choice. I know personally that I will not be able to go to my preferred school if I do not get a decent scholarship. College tuition is simply too high; colleges must reduce or freeze their tuition to make an education at their school accessible to all. People that come up with these prices for tuition are not thinking about the accessibility they need to have to prospective students.
How are they going to pay for particular expenses by coming from a penniless family? Because of this you have athletes accepting illegal things such as money, cars and clothes. College athletes ever year bring in at least millions of dollars due to products and the games played. And the athletes that do can leave college and go pro they do because they are living in near poverty. College students should get paid because of all the income they bring in for their school while playing.
One way of overcome this is to do research. Parents who hope to afford college for their children when the time comes around are better off researching options than simply trying to save more money for education. [ (Insider, 2011) ] Having options will make it better to decide how much you will spend for college. For example, it may be cheaper to go to a community college than a university. Now that the research and financial aid is done you now know how much you have to come out of pocket with.
The giant donations received from these types of students can be put to great use, one of these uses is funding scholarships. While I agree that it is temporarily unfair that students can buy their way into a college, because it effectively takes away spots from other students who worked harder then them. But because that money can then be used to directly help fund scholarships for more students so they can attend a college where they otherwise wouldn’t of been able to, it more then balances out the injustice of the original students that were passed over. When it comes right down to it, students that can afford to pay millions of dollars for their admittance serve a greater good then the average student. Critics would argue that when colleges let in students based on financial donations as opposed to academic prowess, they are actively devaluing the value of the education received at their
Our society undervalues entrepreneurial work, trade skills, and it discourages young people from pursuing this type of education after high school. Now this isn’t a good thing for a few reasons. For example, tuition fees have gone through the roof to go to college over the last thirty years, and that means debts are increasing ridiculously. According to stats from CNBC, right now in the US, college related debts are over a trillion dollars. This debt is getting harder and harder to pay off too, because there are so limited jobs available for college graduates.
Although Vedder’s argument is somewhat convincing because he points out the economic problems of a college education, he neglects educational benefits that students could get from a college education. First of all, Vedder argues that students with poor high school grades will most likely drop out and/or not get a good job even with college degrees. However, he doesn’t consider that there are some students who become motivated and attain high academic accomplishments due to positive effects of learning assistance programs in college. It might be true that students with poor grades would continue having bad studying skills and challenging time management problems, but there are many learning assistance programs that are available for students who want to improve their studying skills, such as tutoring services and learning strategy workshops. For example, Seattle University, from which I graduated, had great learning assistance programs.
When doing that people get the education they want but then have to work two or more jobs to pay back the loan. One way of overcoming this is to do research. Parents who hope to afford college for their children when the time comes around are better off researching options than simply trying to save more money for education. Having options will make it better to decide how much you will spend for college. For example, it may be cheaper to go to a community college than a university.
This puts employers in the position that if one student cannot work unpaid, there are many candidates who can. This is where market failure comes in. Internships are regarded as “merit goods”, which generally benefit society as whole but if the market is left on its own, they tend to be under consumed. Besides, the market failure in providing paying internships inhibits generation of young people from moving up the social ladder. To solve this market failure, government intervention seems to be the only feasible solution so far.
Economic pressure is very hard on students today. Colleges’ tuitions have been increased year after year. Students take out loans, so they can afford to attend colleges. Having to pay back loans after one year of graduation causes them to set their mind straight to jobs that will get them out of debt as soon as possible. High unemployment rate and people being laid off makes the economic pressure, which plays a very important role in students’ lives.
