College Now vs. College in 1985 I would like to explore the similarities and differences in my college experience in 1985 to my short but severely different experience of today. I have re-entered college with the ultimate goal of earning my MBA. My goals now are very similar to the goals of my past college experience, to further my education. Learn critical thinking skills; deal with more diversity than experienced to this point in my life. I go to class in much the same manner as in the past, I drive to school. I purchase books in much the same way as well. The lectures are still very similar today as they had been in the past. I go to class, there are 10-50 students attending the lecture. The professors present their information in much the same way today as in the past, they speak and we listen. However there are some distinctive differences depending on the class and subject. In the past the professors used the “over-head” projectors and wrote on transparencies or used slide projectors to teach. Today we use a combination of computers and software and a different type of projector to teach, we also use whiteboards and colored pens instead of chalkboards and colored chalk. These are evolutions in technology. These similarities are important, but I find the differences more interesting. Let me start by telling you some things we did not have in 1985. Cell phones, laptop computers, internet, fax machines, printers, and the software applications like word processing or spread sheet or any other type of programs to run on all of this equipment, to name a few but important items. What we did have were pay phones, mainframe computers, computer labs and electric typewriters.
