College Expectations and Learning Just like people come in many shapes and sizes, so do the way they learn. Some different styles of learning are auditory, visual, and tactile. Although some people believe that learning comes from interest in a topic, it is proven that everyone can relate to one learning style or another. Remember, there is no best or right way to learn. We are all unique and must learn to adapt to different learning styles, each other, and schools while building our individual skills to achieve college goals. Coming from a non-educated Hispanic family, it became evident to me that in life there is so much more than meets the eye. Education is very important and can hold an individual back from personal goals. In order to get promoted in my Army Military Occupation Specialties, I needed to further my knowledge in my career field. Public Health follows closely to the nursing field and as an Emergency Medical Technician, getting a degree was the next step. Not only did I want to get a degree for my career but also for my mom and dad who put their education aside to raise the family. No matter how hard life has been or will become, overcoming personal learning challenges mentally and physically will put me in a rewarding situation in the end. One rewarding thing taken from this class is recognizing that I am different and can use my strengths to an advantage in the classroom. Tactile learners like doing things hands on according to The Center for New Discoveries in Learning. They are quoted saying, “Be grateful for your talents and also, it is important to know that most company and school environments cater to people whose highest learning style preference is visual.” As a tactile learner myself, taking breaks to move around while studying helps me a lot.
