Taking extra measures to succeed is nothing new to me. I experienced a tremendous amount of success in the second grade and my baseball team considered me the most valuable player. Hitting home runs was always easy but no one knew I was internally struggling. There were days I clearly remember leaving third base and after the game my uncle would greet me with warm praises of “ Good Job.” Unfortunately, this feeling of accomplishment was a fleeting one. While I experienced success in baseball, I felt like a failure in other areas in my life. In school I’ve always managed to earn good grades. Despite this fact my confidence was low and I was insecure. When I was younger, labels and how people viewed me strongly affected my outlook on life.…show more content…
Our team consisted of players with little experience. Even in our school we found little support. The words “you suck” repeatedly spoken from the stands of the field, so I decided to take the leadership role as team captain. I had to dig deep and I went back to the strength that I used to get through the days no one believed in me, the days when dyslexia confused me. Finding motivation I told the team “Ignore the negative thoughts and comments. People who are not on the field with us don’t have the same mental strength to be playing and making a difference to ourselves and the school.” My team persevered and while our baseball may not have finished the season with the strongest scores we finished, heads up high looking towards our next season. It has been a distinct honor to serve as takes the team captain. Through leadership experiences I gained the power and motivation to serve well as a second coach to my team and evolve into the confident student I am today. Baseball great Mickey Mantle once said, "It's unbelievable how much you don't know about the game you've been playing all your life." For me, this road has not been easy. I have had to redefine myself in the process several times.
