Colin Powell was the first black man to be a Secretary of State. Powell was born on April 5, 1937 into the arms of two loving Jamaican parents. Powell’s parents always stressed to Powell and his sister the importance of education and personal achievement. Powell had only one sibling, a sister; she was five-and-a-half years older than Powell. Powell grew up in south Bronx where he graduated from high school. Powell enrolled in the college of New York City for geology; while at the University of New York City Powell realized his true calling after joining the JROTC. Powell was commander of his JROTC class at the University of New York City. Powell graduated the year of 1958 as the top of his JROTC class, and he also had the highest rank in the corps, the rank of cadet colonel. Powell was then commissioned, given a certain authority or power to carry out a specified task, as a second lieutenant of the United States army. Powell was one of 16,000 military advisors dispatched to South Vietnam by the President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, in the year of 1962. While dispatched to Vietnam Powell was wounded by a punji-stick booby trap; Powell was awarded the Purple Heart for his service and later that same year a bronze star. Powell was dispatched to Vietnam yet again to serve in the army the years of 1968 and 1969. Ironically enough Powell was injured yet again in his second deployment to Vietnam, but this time Powell was injured by a helicopter crash in Vietnam. When the helicopter crashed in Vietnam, Powell even though he had injuries, managed to save all of his comrades from the burning helicopter. After Powell rescued his comrades he was awarded the Soldier’s medal for his bravery. Powell has overall won eleven military awards in his time including, the Legion of Merit.
