Codman & Shurtleff, Inc Case Study Review & Analysis By Mario Silva, Jason Fluckey, & Anthony Reeve Azusa Pacific University BUSI 512 Professor Emmanuel Ogunji October 21st, 2014 Codman & Shurtleff Case Study Review & Analysis Operational Structure The following section will discuss the organizational structure in which Codman & Shurtleff Incorporated operates as well as the institutional relationship the organization has with its parent company; Johnson & Johnson. Furthermore, special emphasis will be put on how that relationship affects the operational structure of that company by examining the various strengths and weaknesses its organizational culture has developed in terms of efficacy of operations. The operational structure of Codman & Shurtleff Incorporated is very peculiar. The company relies heavily on the organizational culture of Johnson & Johnson in order to do its business in an operational context. That said, Johnson & Johnson makes use of a decentralized management system that allows all of the company's subsidiaries like Codman to operate autonomously in order to compete in their particular markets. A decentralized operational system allows for multiple individuals to take responsibility for making business decisions and running the daily operations of the particular company that might be implementing said management system. In other words, decentralized organizations depend on a team environment and its dynamics in order to accomplish results at different levels of their business. In this context, Johnson & Johnson implementation of said operational system enables Codman & Shurtleff to develop its own plans and strategies by distributing the responsibility of its operations to different sectors of the business (much like Johnson &Johnson delegates autonomy to its subsidiaries) in order
