Coca-Cola in India The overuse of India’s groundwater and health-safety violations Executive Summary This paper analyses the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in environmental sustainability in reaction to overuse of India’s groundwater and health-safety violations. This case is an example of evolving corporate social responsibility (CSR), which can avert the tragedy of the commons’ as well as health and safety issues. The aim of this paper is to discuss and analyze the actions that Coca Cola has taken as a part of their corporate social responsibility and what improvements has been done. Coca Cola’s Profile Coca-Cola syrup was invented in 1886, however the company was founded in 1919 as a local soda producer in Atlanta, Georgia (US) (Reuters, 2015). By the 1920s the company started selling its products first in the Caribbean and Canadian markets and then moving to Asia, Europe, South America and the Soviet Union. Today the company is selling its products in almost every country in the world. By the 2005 the company became the largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of non-alcoholic beverages and syrups in the world. Coca-Cola is a publicly-held company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) since 1920. (Cristina A. Cedillo Torres, 2012). The company’s mission is to refresh the world, inspire moments of optimism and happiness, create value and make a difference. Coca Cola’s vision serves as the framework for their roadmap and guides every aspect of thir business to continue achieving sustainable and quality growth. The company’s core aspects of vision are people, portfolio, partners, planet, profit and productivity. Coca Cola’s values serve as a compass for their actions and describe how they behave in the world. The core values are leadership, collaboration, integrity, accountability, passion, diversity and quality
