Company Overview Coca-Cola is a type of carbonated drink that was produced on May 8, 1886 and is now sold in more than 200 countries nationwide and consists of more than 2800 different beverage products. It was invented in Atlanta, Georgia by a man named John Smith Pemberton, a local pharmacist. It was originally called Pemberton’s French Wine Coca because it consisted of a stimulant that was mixed in the beverage and produced from cocoa leaves from South America. It was originally produced as a medicine that was said to cure morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache, and impotence (The Coca-Cola Company). The first advertisement for his product ran in the Atlanta Journal and only sold nine drinks each day (The Coca-Cola Company). The new product was first introduced at Jacob’s Pharmacy costing only five cents a glass. The syrup, which Pemberton produced, was mixed with carbonated water to give it a refreshing taste. Pemberton used five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup, which is a pretty significant dose. Prior to his death, Pemberton sold his company to a man named Asa Griggs Candler. According to Michael Liebowitz, “In 1891, Candler claimed his formula contained only a tenth of the amount of stimulant that Pemberton’s formula did. Coca-Cola at one time used nine milligrams of cocaine per glass, but in 1903 it was removed”. Now Coca-Cola uses a non-narcotic coca leaf extract prepared at Stepan Company in Maywood, New Jersey. It is the only company in the United States that is allowed to import and process the coca plant (May). The Coca-Cola Company only produces the concentrated syrup. The bottlers produce the finished product by adding the carbonated water and putting it into the containers, either bottles or cans.
