"Coach Knight: A Will to Win" and "Coach K: A Matter of the Heart." . "Coach Knight: A Will to Win" and "Coach K: A Matter of the Heart." Leadership is important in all aspects of life. There are different qualities that are necessary; however it is not necessary to have all of the traits. The six traits of a leader as defined by Northouse are: drive, motivation, integrity, confidence, cognitive ability, and task knowledge, (Northouse, 2013, p. 40). Coach Knight was a mentor to Coach K and both of them have the utmost respect for each other. Coach K and Coach Knight have different qualities that both lead to success for each of their teams that they are coaching. It is important that we understand how each coach’s traits and how each have some of the qualities within each other. Manager and Leadership There are differences between a manager and a leader. The leader nurtures and asks like a mentor to their employees or in this case the players. Coach K is a consertive mentor who builds up his team with moral values. He does not force players and also understands what they players need and want. He wants to build up his players with solid morals. Coach K is a part of the players lives he considers them family. Coach Knight is a strong willed coach. He has a quality that is string willed. Coach Knight gets through his players and they respect him. Coach Knight-intelligence, extraversion. dominance, masculinity. Coach Knight has the qualities of a leader. Coach Knight relies on dominance of his players. He commands them to become better players. Coach Knight does not take the conservative approach. He has a dominance attitude and it has been noted by his players and assistance coaches. Traits of Influence The coaches traits have effected and influenced each’s own leadership. They do share traits that each one takes to a different level. Coach Knight
