Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor With this essay I will look at the work of Anish Kapoor, my given image is of his Cloud Gate sculpture. I will initially provide a personal image deconstruction laying my thoughts to the given image. I will then research into Kapoor and his work, and then compare my findings with my own thoughts. The image I was given is the Cloud Gate sculpture by Anish Kapoor, my first thought when looking at it was how cool and quirky it is. It has a resemblance to a kidney bean but also has a sci-fi alien feel to it due to the shape and material, which I think maybe stainless steel that has been highly polished. The shape colour and texture reminds me of a drop of mercury; like you would find in a thermometer. As mercury his highly poisonous it makes me wonder if the sculptor was trying to relate this to the city in someway or something that had happened there. The sculpture is seamless, showing no joints in its construction and creates a very clear reflection of the city surrounding it, as it looks like its one single molded sheet. Its interesting how the shape of the sculpture distorts the background city, it reminds me of the curve of the Earth like you see in photographs taken from space; which makes me think about if this was Kapoors intentions. This may also link with the idea of mercury being poisonous and how the cities distort the landscape or even how they are destroying the environment. The Cloud Gate sculpture is very eye catching and is a real contrast to the architecture in its surroundings, which makes it feel even more futuristic. Even though the scale of the sculpture is quite large it doesn’t have a heavy and bulky feel to it, this may be because it’s just held up by two points and the sleekness of it. Jeff Koon’s work comes to mind when looking at this sculpture in particular his Rabbit. Koon’s creates balloon animals in stainless
