Clinical skills The skill I have identified for the following assignment is intramuscular injections (IMI); I will give a rational for the selected clinical skill, which I am working towards becoming competent in practice. The discussion will include knowledge underpinning practice and the evidence base for the clinical skill. I will reflect on how I have achieved my level of competence using the Gibbs model (Gibbs, 1988), this reflective model incorporates: descriptions, feelings, evaluations, analysis, conclusion (Gibbs, 1988). The Gibbs model (Gibbs, 1988), will be applied to the essay to facilitate how I have achieved this level of competence and approaches to learning used. My rational for the I have chosen this as within my second placement IMI is a routinely used method of administrating oil based depot and other long acting intramuscular antipsychotic injections, due to this I have become involve in the process of IMI. As a student I need to build and understanding of this skill therefore I am researching the topic of IMI to increase and develop my knowledge and in practice and under guidance of my mentor with the aim that throughout my professional career it will help me administer IMI safely adhering within trust policies as being a mental health nurse I will find myself administer IMI on a regular basis there is evidence that educating student nurses on injection techniques leads to improved and safer practice. One definition of injection is the act of giving medication by use of syringe and needle (Dougherty and Lister 2011). An IMI is administration of medicine given directly through the cutaneous and subcutaneous layer of the skin deep into a muscle. Tortora and Derrickson (2008) state there are five muscles advocated as possible sites for IMI these sites are: Deltod, Dorsogluteal, Ventrogluteal, Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis but the
