Communications Assignment Part 1: What contributions are scientists making to help overcome the problems of climate change and reducing carbon dioxide emissions? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recommended that, to try to avoid the worst excesses of Climate Change, carbon dioxide level in the upper atmosphere should be limited to around 550 parts per million by volume, which is about twice pre-industrial levels. The current level is around 363 ppmv. This implies that a 60% reduction in emissions (from 1999 levels) should be made globally, a target which has also been recommended as relevant for the UK by the Royal Commission on Environment Pollution, which also proposed a target date of 2050. (Elliott, David (2003), pp. 19–47) The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; which is made up of many scientists; have suggested that to prevent further climate change due to increased carbon dioxide levels, there should be a restriction implemented of these levels to about 550 parts per million by volume, which estimates to be around double the amount of carbon dioxide levels produced excluding the industrial levels or before the industrial levels. The current level is around 363ppm and this figure suggests that there should be a 60% decrease in the carbon dioxide levels since 1999. Even the UK has approved of this target by 2050, as decided by the Royal Commissions on Environmental Pollution. Reference: (Elliott, David (2003).
