The Clean Up of Bryant Park | Edwin Simmonds Abstract Bryant Park was first opened in 1847 as Reservoir Square. Located In New York City on 42nd street between fifth and sixth ave. In 1884 it was renamed Bryant Park after New York Post editor and abolitionist William Cullen Bryant. At the turn of the century Bryant Park went through many changes and many event took place from construction, anti-war rallies among other things. By the 1970’s the park had become a haven for drugs, violent crimes, and prostitution. By 1988 the park was shut down in an effort to renovate and revitalize it. In 1992 it was reopened to great fanfare New York publications lauded the efforts of Mayor Koch and the Bryant Park Corporation (BPC). In this essay I will examine what elements made the clean up a success Introduction The cleanup of Bryant Park was easy and successful because of cooperative efforts of New York City government, private businesses and the citizens that makes New York City the greatest city in the world. With a detailed strategy and the efforts of the collective people and resources involved it turned out to be a shining example of when government businesses and the people work together for a common cause. I plan to examine what it took to make this project a success, the three main ingredients mentioned already. Method Before any project can take place in NYC the government must approve it and with a prominent land mark like Bryant Park it was a no brainer this had to be done. The initial start was in 1980 by then New York Mayor Koch along with other prominent New Yorkers whom will be discussed later in the next paragraph. With the city government involved the resources that were utilized came across the board from The NYPD who began to crack down on crime in the park, to the Department of Sanitation who aggressively clean up the trash and graffiti that
