Classification Essay The Rise of Alternative Music Alternative music for me, is a mix of emotion and intuitive rhymes. The Alternative music I grew up listening to really shaped my persona. Alternative music was always the source of comfort, intellect, and poetry that I needed while growing up. Whenever I had a problem in school, with friends, or even with everyday problems, I’d and listen to one of my favorite alternative bands and things would seem better. Alternative music was a more understandable and relatable version of music that drew me in. I’m older now and the best thing about alternative music is that it changes and becomes better over time. In the 80’s and 90’s, alternative music was new and it was known as college rock because it was played on college radio. (What is Alternative Music?. (n.d.) Alternative music sprouted from the independent underground music of the 80’s. Soon college rock changed to alternative music because it was in a class of rock all its own. It is different from the other types of rock. Although some still refer to it as plain rock music, it isn’t. It is a genre of rock though. Alternative music became more and more popular by the 90s within the younger generation. (KZOO Music Scene. (n.d.) Alternative music has become and remains widely popular today with the Imagine Dragons song Radioactive topping the charts. The Hot 100 : Page 1 | Billboard. (n.d.) Alternative music isn’t underground anymore and it can be heard on the radio, on tv, and in movies. Also, alternative music does not completely refer to rock much anymore. The name “Alternative” can be applied to any musical genre that is different from others in that genre. However, there are still Independent Record labels and artists out there who demonstrate the alternative spirit of art and intellectualism and so alternative music lives on. References Alternative |
