Jim Hinojosa, in his Eleanor Clarke Slagle lecture “Becoming Innovators In An Era of Hyperchange” implies that we live in a society of “rapid and unpredictable hyperchange” he says, as the world rapidly changes around us, a need for us to also rapidly change and adapt in order to meet our responsibilities both professionally and personally. He says that he has become increasingly aware of how this hyperchange is affecting his life and that of people around him. With an Indian poem about three fish he had once come across, he suggested that in such rapidly changing times we have but two options: to plan ahead or to think fast and that attitude of expecting whatever the outcome may be, is not the right path to choose, as hyperchange seems to occur in such a fast paced manner. If we do not think fast or plan ahead we run the risk of falling and possibly being left behind. Hinojosa, refers to how OT was not considered in the surgeon general’s challenge to health professionals to participate in the reduction of obesity. This he says is because “occupational therapy is not understood as a profession that has potential for increasing peoples participation in life activities.Hinojosa further urges us to be up todate with the expansion of knowledge and new developing methods of practice. His point is further emphasized by Pat Lynch, president of the consulting firm Potential, who states that as time goes by, the need to keep up with new information is very important. As we acquire new knowledge with changing times, our knowledge becomes dormant. A situation which she attributes to four things: increasing uncertainty, rapid pace of change, growing ambiguity and increased complexity in the workplace.
