Tiffany Allen CJ 210: Criminal Investigation Professor Cindy Johnson March 3, 2013 In Today’s society there are many specific ethical considerations that need to be addressed when investigating a specific crime. In this report I will talk about Rape and Homicide. Rape is when the victim is forced to have sexual intercourse. A Homicide is a person who kills another human being. Other questions that I will also talk about are how to reduce ethical problems in an investigation, what prosecution problems could arise and what ethical issues are related to the prosecution. What are the specific ethical considerations that need to be addressed when investigating the specific crime? When an investigator is investigating a rape, he or she would need to be very sympathetic and try to understand that the victim is going through a horrific incident. The investigator must be very careful when asking the victim questions about the rape and the suspect/suspects and not to assume anything. This information could be used as evidence later when it goes to trial in court. In a homicide, the ethical considerations are similar. The investigator should express sympathy and be very compassionate not only to the victim’s family but friends as well. These people could potentially be informants or even witnesses for the prosecution in the case. In addition to the interviews or even the interrogations the investigator needs to have a positive attitude, sensitivity and be able to think clearly when it comes time to collect evidence at the scene of the crime. Once this evidence is collected, the investigator will need to carefully transport the evidence collected to labs where it will be examined by professional specialists (forensic pathologists, DNA specialist or a finger print technician).
