Civil War and Reconstruction Test Review 1. President Johnson showed his lack of support for greater rights of African Americans by vetoing the Freedmen’s Act. 2. The Freedman’s bureau is a system that helps former slaves transfer to a freed life. Its responsibilities were to to mediate between plantation owners and laborers to negotiate labor contracts for the freedmen, offer charitable aid and rations to the destitute, carry out jurisdiction over any civil cases involving freedmen, and open schools for freedmen, offering the education so long denied them in slavery. 3. Scalawags were southerners who supported reconstruction and the Republican Party after the civil war. 4. Carpetbaggers were northerners who came to the south during the reconstruction era to make money. 5. Sharecroppers were farmers who worked somebody else’s land, and paid rent with 2/3 crop. 6. Tennant farmers were farmers who paid rent and kept the crops. 7. The new Republican governments in the South had difficulties after the civil war because most of the south population resented and disliked Reconstruction, and few cooperated in Reconstruction. 8. President Andrew Johnson was impeached because he violated the 1867 Tenure of Office Act, violated the Command of the Army Act and, libeling Congress with "inflammatory and scandalous harangues." 9. The Military Reconstruction Act of 1876 divided the south into five military districts, each under a military general. 10. The Ku Klux Klan acts were force acts upon hate groups. 11. The 13th amendment abolished slavery. 12. The 14th amendment declared anyone born in or naturalized in the U.S was a citizen. 13. The 15th amendment gave black males the right to vote. 14.
