HIS335: US Civil War 1. Using information from the readings, write a comprehensive and detailed essay discussing the three most important factors in the Confederacy’s defeat in the Civil War. Be sure to defend your position. For the Confederacy, the Civil War was fought because they believed their rights were being trampled. However during the war the three most important factors that led to the Confederacy’s defeat were Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the differences in political leadership, and Grant taking control over the Mississippi River. After the Battle of Antietam President Abraham Lincoln decided to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation “declared that the slaves in the states still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”’ (McPherson 2010 pg. 317) Lincoln originally had no intention on ruling on slavery as a whole but knew that the end of the war would rule on the issue. Lincoln basically used the emancipation of the Confederacy slaves as a consequence they would face if they did not rejoin the Union by the end of the year. The Emancipation Proclamation also told the rest of the world what the Confederacy was fighting for and that was to keep the institution of slavery. Great Britain and France had flirted with the idea of joining the war efforts alongside the Confederacy but when the proclamation was issued Europe did not step up to Southern aid. Slavery had been abolished in Europe and they could not support or offer help to the Confederacy who fought for it. Ulysses S. Grant was also an important factor in the Confederacy’s defeat in the Civil War. Grant’s strategic tactics allowed him to gain control of the Mississippi River which allowed the Union armies to control the transport of their resources to each other and allowed them more opportunity for resources.
