Drawing on what you have learnt from the “Making Social Lives” DVD and “Learning Companion 1”, describe some inequalities on City Road. City Road is a 1 mile stretch of road which is one of the busiest roads in Cardiff. It is used by a wide range of people at all hours of the day and night, home to a wide range of people and full of shops, restaurants, takeaways and bars. People use the road for many different purposes, including working on city road, using it to get elsewhere as well as visiting the range of different shops. They find that shops, cafes and restaurants along the road provide a sense of community and make people feel safe and welcomed throughout the day, although there seems to be a difference in views on the road after night fall, people tend to feel more insecure of the area, become more fearful of walking to and from the local social organisations, many people avoid walking at all costs and would prefer to get a taxi even for very short journeys. T he road is described as rough by members or the community although it has not always been known like this, many people that have lived in the area a long time are saying they used to be able to walk around happily and with no fear but things have changed, the amount of takeaways, bars and restaurants has caused more violence and crime within the area due to attracting a different crowd to what it used too. The local police officer ‘PC Bob Keohane’ feels differently about the area explaining that the road is safe 24hours a day as long as you have your commonsense. The way that people feel regarding an area can be down to their own imagination, their own perspective, what they see when they walk down the street and their own experiences and the history they have within the area. If you walk down a street and you see graffiti, vandalisms or litter you instantly presume that the area is somewhat rough and begin in your minds to become fearful from what…show more content…
