Even though San Francisco had experienced a few earthquakes and fires prior to the twentieth century, people chose to focus on the future and look forward to the new possibilities that could unfold. San Francisco was always known for its risqué entertainment industry. Many people looked down on this trend of culture in the society. San Franciscans were determined to improve their cities’ reputation, and wanted to make the city a recognized center for the arts. With a lot of work, their determination finally paid off.
How stable was the Weimar Republic 1924-29 The real increase in prosperity experienced by many, and the cultural vitality of the period, gave support to the view that these years were indeed the ‘golden years’. However, historians have generally tended to question this stability because it was in fact limited in scope therefore these years could be seen as ‘deceptive stability’ also. Any disruption to the world’s trade or finance markets was bound to have a particularly damaging effect on the uncertain German economy. In reality, the middle years of the Weimar Republic were stable only in comparison with the other periods before and after. Weimar’s condition suggests that the fundamental problems inherited from war and the crisis has not been resolved.
Pitt realized the best way how to collect taxes would be through indirect taxes on the rich. Therefore he came up with taxing the strangest pleasures of the upper class such as horses, wigs, powders and even windows. But Pitt also thought about taxing the lower class. He ordered taxes on candles, because they were very common. Despite all of it, his taxation policy was generally successful.
I would argue that in this excerpt of Ask the Dust John Fante's character Arturo Bandini is very fascinated with the city of Los Angeles and is hoping for success and fame, not giving up on his dreams, but will still not find fulfilled happiness or inspiration in the city. His story also shows a certain slight features of the School of Noir. This will point out that even in the late 1930’s Los Angeles was already connected with dreams and hopes for a better life but that there is a different side of the city that is not as glamorous. "Ask The Dust" is a novel written by John Fante and published in 1939. It is about the young writer Arturo Bandini from Colorado, who came to Los Angeles with the dream of becoming a successful writer.
32) was definitely proven in this article. He writes about several instances where he runs in to astonished guest who are amazed by the décor of the Las Vegas strip and especially the Venetian. Curtis’s himself even states “No, while I’m here I have to guard against being swept up by an utterly undignified enthusiasm for the place. Despite myself, I love Las Vegas.” (Pg. 34) He also proves that the Las Vegas is not the only place that has caught on to these faux decors.
Hercules left with nothing other than the clothes on his back and the sword in his hand. When Hercules reached the city of Corinth the wonderful people and the fascinating architecture amazed him. After explaining his goal to the people of Corinth, Hercules was showered with offerings. The people offered Hercules food, wine, and even offered daughters in marriage. People warned Hercules of the powerful gorgon that transformed people into golden roses.
Dona Evarista is seen taking delight over her husband's glory, covered herself with silks, jewels and flowers. Everyone in the area came to see her for more than two times. People not only paid court to her but praised her, for — and this fact does great honor to the society of the time. I find that complexity and ambiguity are the major characteristics of Onetti's story and he is not very much to arriving at the truth of a situation than in isolating its components and its alternatives which are very likely to bring about falsehood as facts. But Allende is a psychological realist, and she recognizes realism and the need for the oxygen of romance in the routine of human existence.
The Warrior of the Heart In Edmond Rostand’s play, Cyrano de Bergerac, one personality stands above the rest; the bravery and honor he shows certainly makes him deserving to have such a play named after him. Cyrano de Bergerac resembles the “prince charming” that would grace the pages of any fairy tale story, save for one insecurity: his nose. Although it is taught that outward appearances mean nothing in the face of inner strength and personality, Cyrano finds himself unworthy¾only for sake of his nose¾to be loved by Roxane, the beautiful and intellectual woman of his childhood. It is to be the city of love, as many call Paris, yet Cyrano stands alone, his silent love burning beneath his breast while on the outside, he is the perfect friend to Roxane. In the fantastical world that is Cyrano de Bergerac, there exists the type of hero that has been lost in the modern world.
I don’t believe a word Pericles says about Athens in the Funeral Pericles “the first Athenian citizen” is blinded by power. he has so much power that he see his state as the best most perfect state ever when really there was many flaws that he could not see like the average man. Pericles thinks of Athens as if it was the best place on earth, it is flawless to him, but it’s too unrealistic. I don’t agree with Percale because he is writing in a time of grief after many men have died for Athens, and he wants to encourage people, heal the people. He wants people to feel good about them.
I can’t speak for anyone in the audience but I can say that the speech had effects on my views because in all reality if two gay people do get married it doesn’t change a thing for most people. If you’re able to gain one audience member’s reason then, your speech has been effective even if the least bit. Because he was gay, talking about how it is unfair for banning gay marriage puts him in the middle of advantage and a disadvantage. It’s a disadvantage because we’re only getting the gay person’s perspective on gay marriage, but it’s an advantage because of the personal connections between him and his theory. Even though he faces the disadvantage, he was still thorough at getting his point across.
