Tanya Garnett Mrs. Gonzales Enc1101 12:30 Class Circus Elephants Most people attend circuses in admiration of circus animals. A circus is not a circus without elephants. The elephant often dressed to impress, has an outstandingly painted body and performs tricks and even offers rides for a price. The price that elephants pay is often not worth the cost of an admission ticket to the circus. Elephants endure abuse and cruelty to put on a great show for an audience unaware of the pain that is being suffered. Every major circus in the United States that uses Animal Welfare Act (AWA), has been cited for violating the least standards of care. Circus animals in spend about 11 months of the year traveling and may be caged or chained for long distances and hours and forced to stand in their own waste in intense temperatures. Tools of the trade may include bull hooks, whips, clubs, and electric prods. Animals born in circus breeding programs have never been released into their natural habitat. From 1994 to 2005, there were 31 elephants reported dead from premature deaths in the circus. Other circus animals that have died prematurely are horses and lions. Elephant and felines held in circus captivity have a resulted in hundreds of injuries to humans, many of which resulted in death. Elephants in the wild live in large, sociable herds and walk up to 25 miles every day. In the circus they spend most of their time in cages or chains.
