Because of its audio-visual character it has a great mass appeal. Such a powerful and effective means of communication can be gainfully utilised in a variety of ways. ‘It can be used for creating public awakening. Through its appeal public cooperation in the task of nation-building can be obtained. It can help in the eradication of superstitions, ignorance and illiteracy. Its educative value is great. Many countries have successfully used this medium for educating their children. It can be described as a pace-setter in the fields of fashion and taste as well. The Indian film industry is the largest in the world. Indian films have a great market outside India as well. They are a great source of foreign exchange earning. The major part of the industry is engaged in the production of Hindi films. The production of films, in regional languages has also reached a high level of development. Despite the fact that it is the most powerful medium of mass communication and has attained a high level of development, the Indian film industry and films suffer from many ills. The Indian film industry is faced with many problems. It is a highly speculative trade. In certain cases the investment may bring good returns, while in others all the money may be lost. The industry is in private hands and is run purely on commercial basis. The producers want quick returns. So they produce cheap films to cater to the taste of illiterate and ignorant cinema-goers.
