“The idea of art can be expanded to embrace the whole range of man-made things, including all the tools and writing in addition to the useless, beautiful, and poetic things of the world. By this view the universe of man-made things simply coincides with the history of art” (Kubler). So much history is stored in all these artifacts that were made by humans; where it came from, what was the story behind it, how it survived after all these years, these are the questions that are wandering our minds. Yet, there are still so much un-answered questions that we still don’t know. In order to find out these questions, the intense searching into the deep ruins of the artifacts life is vital.
My life is a complex and brilliant painting and The Bronx is my canvas. I am a streak of white paint that has blended and mixed well with the various shades and colors of life. After each year, Dozens of layers of strokes and patterns are added to the vast painting I call life. The canvas was never clear, and was blank to begin with as I built upon the rich experiences of my diverse ancestry. In fact, it is a portrayal of my family’s history and of the aspirations I continuously hold dear.
These scenes were all painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. The smaller scenes are the logical consequences of the larger scenes. It is remarkable how much Michelangelo’s talent shines through but even more remarkable is that the Pope gave him freedom to depict the Genesis stories with free reign of his imagination paired with his knowledge of the Bible and of contemporary culture. Over the four year period he worked mostly in solitude, he was only thirty three years old. In each of the scenes depicted there are very impressive facial expressions.
A modernist, Strand was highly influenced by Alfred Stieglitz and Charles Sheeler. His work had a huge impact on the f/64 school of photographers (Ansel Adams, Edward Weston etc). In 1915 he started working with large format cameras (then referred to as “straight photography”). Combining elements of abstraction and reality in his compositions, Strand began to develop his own personal style. Heavily influenced by Stieglitz and Charles Sheeler, his subject matter ranged from architectural pictures, portraits and still life
He created two of the most respected pieces of art in human history, The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, both of which still maintain their credibility as masterpieces to this day. Da Vinci’s notebook also proved him to be a Renaissance man, he had many great ideas in various subjects including art, writing, anatomy and scientific design. Da Vinci’s notes show primitive ideas for inventions that wouldn’t be fully developed until centuries later. This flood of intelligence is what prevented a lot of his ideas from fully developing. Since da Vinci excelled in many subjects, he never had enough time in his life to completely focus on mastering one field in particular.

Tattoos are probably better and safer now than they’ve ever been, and it goes without saying people get more creative with such a wide variety, applied in many cases by serious, highly skilled body artists. Then again, there are tattoos, and there are tattoos. Some tattoo aficionados have transformed large portions of their bodies into multicolored canvases for all types of skulls, serpents, raptors, dragons, flowers, vines, angels, demons, daggers, buxom bombshells and portraits of heroes and loved ones. If you can dream it, there is an artist that can produce it. Tattoos have been used for centuries to reflect changes in life status, whether passage into adulthood or induction into a group like the military or a gang.
The artist-scholar can spend years searching for understanding in each work. This understanding he seeks is not just of the scene he sees but of universal structure and himself within it. In turn, his discoveries surface in his brushwork, composition, and the spirit of his mountains, trees, water, and sky. It is no wonder, that the cannon for Chinese art remained among the literati painters over so many centuries. Through painting, one could reach a further understanding of Tao or rather repossess his ancestors knowledge of Tao.
