It is important for graduate students in counseling programs to learn theories because they are the building blocks in understanding human development and behavior. Learning theories will guide counseling students in gaining a better understanding on how people function. It will give them a body of knowledge that has been passed on by theorist such as Freud, Piagit, and Pavlov just to name a few. Future counselors can use theories to form a foundation from which they can build upon by combing the learned theories and their personal life experiences and values before settling on an approach. Theories will provide the counselors with the necessary tools needed to help in healing and personal growth of their clients. What do you know about counseling and psychotherapy theories?
