One poem that holds a significant moment where the central idea of the piece is revealed, is 'An Ode to Autumn' by John Keats. The poem contains three verses each describing different stages of the season of Autumn, but in the third and final verse it becomes clear that the central theme of the poem is the stages in a life resulting in death. Keats achieves this effectively through his use of structure and imagery. An obvious idea of the poem is a celebration of the season of Autumn, as in the opening line it is depicted as the: “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,” This paints the picture of a very soft climate with no harsh winds or rain and gives the idea that this is the very beginning of Autumn as fruit is still on the trees. This is an effective way of opening the poem because it will go on to narrate the cycle of Autumn. The season is portrayed as innocent by using words such as “bless” and “sweet”, this gives the idea that the beginning of Autumn is like a child. This image is continued: “To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees, And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;” This suggests that changes are happening to nature without any interference, which reflects how a child begins growing straight from birth. Stanza two begins with a rhetorical question: “Who hath not seen thee oft amid they store?” Using a rhetorical question at the beginning of this stanza gives a new tone to the poem. It suggests a maturer thinker than that of stanza one, this would be the adulthood stage in a life. To continue this image, Keats describes a number of working environments throughout the stanza such as, “a granary floor” and mentions somebody working in a field picking poppies to make opiates.
