A) The serous membrane in Chloe’s abdomen that contains the greatest amount of adipose tissue is the peritoneum. The peritoneum is the largest serous membrane of the body which includes the greater omentum, and the largest peritoneal fold. The omentum contains a large amount of adipose tissue; this tissue will expand with weight gain which gives some people the beer belly look (Jenkins, 2010 Pg. 781). B) The involuntary muscle process initiated by deglutition of water which may cause Chloe pain, swallowing would be the involuntary muscle process. By swallowing it contracts the pharyngeal muscles which sets peristalsis, it begins with coordinated contractions and relaxation of muscles in the esophagus and into the stomach (Jenkins, 2010 Pg.788). C) The reason that reducing Chloe’s stomach size would reduce her acid reflux because of her bypass surgery which reduced her stomach size which now empties quicker because of the reduction of the duodenum where most of the churning takes place with digestive enzymes, that could force the sphincter to emit the reflux (Jenkins, 2010 Pg. 794). D) The protein digestion will be affected by Chloe’s surgery because the proteins will be flushed out of the body at a faster rate. Because of the proteins being flushed out at a faster rate she would have malabsorption. Digestive system is altered with gastric bypass surgery the amount of acid in the stomach produced is much lower than the amount of acid the stomach produced before the surgery. With acid being extremely important with breaking down proteins, Chloe’s digestive system will have difficulty breaking down the proteins into the proper amino acids, proteins cannot be absorbed as a whole they need to be absorbed as amino acids. Because of the re-sectioning of Chloe’s stomach after the surgery there will be a reduction or elimination of hydrochloric acid, pepsinogen, and the
