It first started out with less than 50 members, but would have 60 million members by the 21st century. Mao Zedong became the first of the three main leaders of the Chinese Communist Party. With the help of Michael Borodin, the chief Soviet adviser, Chiang Kai-shek succeeded Sun Yat-sen as leader of China’s Nationalist Party. Chiang became the supreme commander of the Northern Expeditionary Forces on July 9, 1926.
