Information on the country Language: * Spanish is the official language of Chile. * There are many different minority languages of Chile such as Mapudungun, Moluche, Picunche, and Pehuenche. * Also the Aymara, who live in Chile, speak Aymaran. Maps: * Chile is located along South America’s Pacific coast. It is a long narrow country. * It shares a border with Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. * Part of its territory includes Easter Island, and Juan Fernandez Islands. Lodging/Housing: * The lower class usually live in small thatched-roof houses with dirt floors. Some live in makeshift houses that do not have running water or electricity. * The middle class live in apartments or a small house. * The upper class live in large and well-furnished homes. A hug and handshake is the most common greeting among friends and relatives. Common greetings around Chile are Que Tal? (What’s going on?), Como estai?( How are you?), and Gusto de verte!(Nice to meet or see you). It is common to call people senor, senora, and senorita. * Also eye contact and good posture are important in a conversation. While excessive hand gestures are avoided. Yawns are suppressed or politely concealed. Items are to be handed to, not toss. They point with puckered lips rather than with their index finger. * The important holidays in Chile are Independence Day celebrated on the 18th and 19th of September. New Year’s Eve, and Easter. * They celebrate Independence Day by parades, dances, drinking, music, rodeos, and eating traditional Chilean food. They celebrate New Year’s Eve with barbecues, and fireworks, they also eat a spoonful of lentil for luck, and carry money in their pockets for adventure and riches. They celebrate Easter by having huasos accompany the priests.
