Philosophy Essay Write an essay on “Children’s Rights,” with specific reference to Gareth Matthew’s views in The Philosophy of Childhood. In this essay, I am going to discuss various children’s rights and the impact they have in our world. I will try and explain why adults now have to treat children differently because of the rights children now have compared to years ago, and Gareth Matthews views on this. I will regularly make reference to a case study in America where a 12 year old boy wanted to divorce his parents. Children nowadays often take many things for granted. The roof over their heads, their many different possessions and most of all a caring, loving family that are always there for them. Most children would only begin to understand how much they have in a loving family when they lose someone within their family circle. However, our world is changing every day. One example of this is the case of 12 year old Gregory Kingsley in America. Gregory wanted to terminate his parents’ rights so that he could be legally adopted by his foster parents. His father had agreed so it was the rights of his mother to have custody of him that were at stake. However, people learned that Gregory had only spent eight months of the previous eight years living with his mother. Therefore, Gregory won his court case. Children have more and more rights every day. Is it right that a child should be allowed divorce his parents?In certain circumstances I think it is. I think they should be at least 8 years old before they can make such a big decision. Above this age, I think a child is old enough to petition the court on his/her own behalf. They know what way their parents are treating them and they are well able to tell people if they are not being treated right.
