Every Child Matters is a shared programme of change to improve outcomes for all children and young people. It takes forward the Government's vision of radical reform for children, young people and families. It is a new approach to the well being of children and young people from birth to nineteen. 1.1 Explain the value of a child centred model of assessment and planning Child centred assessment and planning is a good way to make sure that the setting is giving the children attending the best possible chance to develop at their own rate. This is done by observation as it enables you to get to know the individuality of the child, ensuring that they are well placed and able to plan and all of their individual needs are met. I feel that in my role, observations take place each day through activities and interaction with the child. Assessing children is an on-going process, routines and activities can also build on information needs and interests. Identify procedures in the early years setting that support children to settle and enjoy play and learning The first few weeks when a child is settling into an early years setting is a time of crucial importance to their later happiness in the setting. All children are individuals and while some children will adjust easily, others will take longer to feel comfortable and secure. Children who have a positive start to their new environment are more likely to feel comfortable, relaxed and valued, feel good about themselves as learners and have a sense of belonging to the pre-school community. All early years settings will have a 'Settling In Policy' describing procedures for supporting children through the settling in stage. Policies should be written with the child's emotional well-being at the centre.
This approach is also a very important part of the government framework of Every Child Matters which states that we should be working together to achieve the best possible outcomes for children in our care. The Early years foundation stage, states that different professionals working together will help to improve outcomes for children both in their learning and development. Understanding what is right and wrong is important to, boundaries in the setting should be clear. Moral development doesn’t start till the child is about 2 years old: 2 years old – they begin to understand the consequences to their actions and what happens to others. 7 years – at this age they have a clear sense of right and wrong. 10 – 11 years – have a understanding of rules so everyone can live happily alongside each other.
