Obesity Childhood Obesity Nicole Scott English 122 Brian Davis April 29, 2012 Obesity Childhood obesity is a growing problem in the society today. Obesity is defined as having an excess of body fat. Childhood obesity has been a growing problem in today’s society due to the fact of low-income families and the economy. Most families cannot afford to eat healthy so they purchase cheaper foods which leads to unhealthy eating habits. Childhood obesity could decrease drastically if more families bought healthier foods and add more physical activity to their child’s daily activities. Obesity is a result of a caloric imbalance which is the consuming of more calories than you are actually burning. A lot of the youth today are more involved in video games and other technology. This leads to less physical activity and more weight gain. Obesity Children are over eating and eating foods high in calories, sugars, starches and sodium all of these can lead to health complications. Some of these health risks include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, bone and joint problems asthma and different types of cancers. The youth today rely so much on their image so for many overweight children being overweight can lead to low self-esteem. That would affect a child social behavior which could lead to psychological problems. Depression could be a major factor which could lead to a decrease in grades, more over eating and also suicide. It is always important to contact a counselor or doctor if these behavioral patterns occur. Obesity There are many ways to prevent childhood obesity. By eating healthy, exercising and consulting with a physician. It is also important to be involved in the child’s process even if the parent is not overweight it could be a family thing.
