Childhood Cancer Childhood cancers are not the same as those that develop in adults. Childhood cancers often develop from changes in the DNA that happen early on in your life, some even before the child is born. Adult cancers are normally liked to lifestyle or environmental risk factors but that is not the case with childhood cancers ( What is the differences between cancers in adults and children ?). Childhood cancer is rare, it accounts for about seven thousand six hundred cases annually in the United States, this is less than one percent of the total cancer incidences ( The cancer Book , 168). Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children under the age of fifteen, second only to accidents( The cancer Book,168). It is rare…show more content…
It arises from the ependymal cells that line the ventricles of the brain and the center of the spinal cord(Ependymoma). These tumors are divided into four major types Subependymomas is grade one and is a typically slow growing tumor.Myxopapillary ependymomas is grade one and is also a typically slow growing tumor. Ependymomas is grade two and is the most common of the ependymal tumors. Ependymomas can be further divided into four subtypes including cellular ependymomas, papillary ependymomas, clear cell ependymomas and tancytic ependymomas. Anaplastic ependymomas is grade three and is a fast growing tumor ( Ependymomas). Ependymomas can appear in many different locations within the brain and spinal column(Ependymomas). Subepenymomas usually appears near a ventricle. Myxopapillary ependymomastend to occur in the lower area of the spinal column(Ependymomas). Ependymomas can normally be found next to or within the ventricular system, while anaplastic ependymomas are most commonly found in the brain in adults and in children it is commonly found in the lower back part of the skull. It is not normally found in the spinal cord(Ependymomas). Ependymomas is described as being a soft, grayish or red tumor that can contain cysts or mineral clacifications(Ependymomas). This tumor is rare in adults it is about two to three percent of primary brain tumors. They are though the sixth most common brain tumor in children and…show more content…
There are numerous types of medulloblastoma that include classic medulloblastoma, desmoplatic nodular medulloblastom, large-cell or anaplastic medulloblastoma, medulloblastoma with neuroblastic or neuronal differentiation, medulloblastoma with glial differentation, medullomyoblastoma, and melanotic medulloblastoma(Medulloblastoma). Medulloblastoma is located in the cerebellum, which is the lower, rear portion of the brain. It is unusual for this tumor to spread outside of the brain and spinal cord(Medulloblastoma). This is a fast growing, high grade tumor. It is the most common of the embryonal tumors which arise from emybryonal or immature cells at the earliest stageof their development(Medulloblastoma). The symptoms that are most common for this tumor are behavioral changes, changes in appetite, increased pressure of the brain , headache, neausea, vomiting, and drowiness, along with problems with coordination, and unusual eye movements(Medulloblastomas). This tumor is rare it makes up less than two percent of all primary brain tumors and eighteen percent in child brain tumors. more than seventy percent of children under ten are diagnosed with pediatric medulloblastomas. Very few occur in children up to the age of one(medulloblastoma). Scientists believe they may have found changes withnin the genes and chromosomes that may play a role in the development of this
