Unit ten E1. Research is a way of gathering new information to answer people’s questions. It helps establish facts and reach new conclusions. ‘The process of gathering information for the purpose of initiating, modifying or terminating a particular investment or group of investments’(Investor words.com, 2012).There are two main approaches, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative is focused on people’s views and opinions and Quantitative are numbers and statistics. Research provides you with up to date information. It is a general term which covers all kinds of studies designed to find responses. A lot of what we do in our daily lives is based on common sense. For example, what we have learnt from others or what we have learnt through personal experience or observation. However, sometimes common sense is not the best approach and sometimes there are conflicting theories about what is best or what works in a particular situation. Research allows people to explore a situation in different methods and find out the results for themselves. For example research can be held out in different ways such as questionnaires, surveys, internet, television, blogs, reviews etc. I have chosen to research about ‘The use of play provision in an early years setting’. The reason I have chosen this is so I can find out how children play. For example, if gender affects how children play such as boys playing in the ‘model corner’ more than girls or girls playing in the ‘home corner’ more than boys. For my research project I chose to do a tally on how many children are in each area of play. E2 &D1. Ethics are moral principles. This means your beliefs of what you think are right and wrong. Research ethics are concerned with the way you carry out your project. Observing children is very important so it is easier to help them progress. ‘Observation is about watching children's actions,
