Sumana Praharaju Mr. Clarke World Core 23 May 2013 Struggles At Such A Young Age In World War II, many countries such as Germany recruited child soldiers when they ran out of adult soldiers. Even today, countries in Africa and Sri Lanka recruit child soldiers. Many of these children are forced to become soldiers due to the long and everlasting civil wars that occur in their countries. Also many children join liberation groups or the government military to overcome economic or other hardships. These children deal with post-traumatic stress because of the ugly and horrific acts they are forced to do. Ida leaves the house at an age of seventeen to “spend the next three years as a guerilla soldier for the Tamil Tigers” (Briggs 82). Ida never dies “because of a battlefield wound but because of a [gang-rape in her own living room]”. Ida is not the only girl who went through this but “thousands of other girls in Sir Lanka who are forcibly recruited or who join to protect themselves against economic hardship and rape”.
