CYPCore34-1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services. In my setting the bullet points listed below, are the factors that need to be taken into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services: • The individual child’s needs - age and abilities of the children and young people • Specific risks to individuals such as Autism, staff-pregnancy and sensory impairments • The function and purpose of environments and services that are available • The duty of care • Desired outcomes for the children and young people • Lines of responsibility and accountability. In my setting, all of the activity’s need to be planned which means that I plan for anything unexpected or unusual that could happen. As a result, I must be alert when planning an activity, I need to make sure that the location or setting of what I plan to do with the Children is the right environment for the activity. Unit Three 1. Describe four factors to consider when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments As a professional working with children, it is our responsibility to ensure that the children we work with feel safe, secure and protected. CYP Core 3.4: Support children and young people’s health and safety 1.UNDERSTAND HOW TO PLAN AND PROVIDE ENVIRONMENTS AND SERVICES THAT SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S HEALTH AND SAFETY 1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services Most of the factors to consider when planning safe and healthy environments for children and young people come down to common sense. As everyone is an individual we need to take in to account each childs level of development and ability when planning a safe and healthy environment. When planning for a healthy and safe indoor environment firstly rooms should be organised to optimise safety, by ensuring there is adequate space in relation to the number of children who will be using it. This allows the children to move around easily and comfortable. Ratios of Staff to Children should also be met to meet current requirements.
D1 make recommendations in relation to identified hazards to minimise the risks to the service user group. The nursery staff should ensure the children are aware of road safety before they are taken on trips to the park. The staff should also be trained on how to handle children which are taken on trips outside the class room. The main hazards, that can be easily minimised ; can be when crossing the road staff can ensure all children are holding hands, in the correct formations one behind the other. Staff should go to the nearest traffic light stops or pelican crossings to avoid stopping traffic themselves, if they walked on the road randomly.
Assessment Task – CYP Core 3.4 Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety Introduction Providing children and young people with a safe environment requires knowledge and understanding of potential hazards and risks. Task 1 links to learning and outcome 1, assessment criteria 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4. You are asked to provide a resource to inform staff in the setting about health and safety issues. You will need to provide: 1.1 A description of the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services. There are a variety of different factors that should be taken into account when planning safe and healthy environments.
Also safe and secure storage should be used, ensuring the draws/cupboards are sturdy, locked and in an appropriate place. 3.2 Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely All settings that provide care for children or allow children to attend have the responsibility to check and prepare the environment to ensure it is safe. When planning to do an activity in a certain area, you have the responsibility to check it is safe, clean, comfortable and secure, this is for the safety of yourself as well as the children. If a child or children feel safe and secure in the environment it is more likely to help them learn and participate in activities provided. When planning or checking the environment as well as checking temperature, safety etc.
AT 5 CYP Core 3.4.1.1 Explore the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environment and services and produce a report of your findings. The factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environment and services While it is necessary to provide activities and equipment for children within our setting to encourage and promote their development it is also important to ensure that health and safety in place. Ways in which we as practitioners can ensure safety for all is by remembering and carrying out certain procedures, and remember some important factors whilst doing this, such as: • When planning room layouts, it is important to remember that all children are individuals with different needs depending on their age and ability. If a certain activity requires a vast use of physical movement then we must take into consideration that perhaps some children may be limited in their movement or based on their age may be less able to perform this certain task then one of an older age. • We would have to also consider children who have sensory impairments, such as a child with limited hearing would struggle to comprehend what was being said when being educated on the explanations of safety.
Specific legal requirements and statutory guidance covers safeguarding, information and complaints, premises and security, outings, equality of opportunities. Medicines, illness and injuries, food and drink, smoking, behaviour management. These cover the many day to day activities we provide. Suitable people include vetting procedures, health, training levels, qualifications and ratio and staff qualification levels. Suitable premises covers children are looked after that premises and environments are safe checks are risk assessments.
1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environment and services. When planning for health and safety indoor and outdoor environments the needs of individual children and young people must be considered along with the age and ability. So when planning for a certain age group we need to make sure the resources are age and stage appropriate. Risk assessment forms are filled in twice daily to check the outdoor and indoor areas before the children are allowed to access them, to make sure floors are clear and the playground is safe, making sure there is no rubbish or animal faeces, all the toys and equipment are checked and cleaned and anything found to be broken or unsafe is removed immediately then reported. When planning activities we must make sure their there is enough space for the activities to be carried out safely.
CORE 3.4 SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE’S HEALTH AND SAFETY 1.1 DESCRIBE THE FACTORS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN PLANNING HEALTHY AND SAFETY INDOOR AND OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS AND SERVICES There are number of factors to take into consideration when planning indoor and outdoor health and safety. Before starting any learning activity the class room should be set and ready for the children to come into school and free from any hazards so that the children are able to work in a safe environment. In my setting every activity has to be planned by the head teacher than the class teacher. This means that we plan for the unexpected or unusual to happen. Therefore, we are alert when planning an activity by making sure the location or setting of what we plan to do with the Children is the right environment for the activity.
