I. What is Child Protective Services? A. The Child Protective Services program strives to ensure safe, permanent, nurturing families for children by protecting them from abuse and neglect while attempting to preserve the family unit B. Child Protective Services help prevent further harm to children from intentional physical or mental injury, sexual abuse, exploitation, or neglect by a person responsible for a child's health or welfare. C. Child Protective Services provide care for children who do not have parents or guardians and children who have little parental care provided to them. D. Provides services to help youth in foster care make the transition to adulthood. E. Places children in foster care F. Places children in adoptive homes. II. Recognizing Child Abuse in a Child A. Sudden change in behavior or school performance B. Always watchful or waiting for something bad to happen. C. Has learning problems. D. Comes to school early, stays late, and does not want to go home. E. Has unexplained burns, bites, bruises, broken bones, or blackened eyes. III. Recognizing Child Abuse in a Parent. A. Shows little or no concern for the child, rarely responding to the school’s request for information. B. Demands perfection or a level of physical academic performance the child cannot achieve. C. Offers conflicting, unconvincing, or no explanation for the child’s injury. D. Is abusing alcohol, prescription drugs, or illegal drus and that abuse is having an adverse impact on the child. E. Uses harsh physical discipline with the child F. Has a history of abuse as a child. IV. Signs of Child Neglect in a child. A. Begs or steals food or money from classmates B. Lacks needed medical or dental care. C. Lacks clothing appropriate for the weather D. Abuses alcohol or other drugs
