What is Child Poverty -Key Causes and Impacts Children are the shape of our future but child poverty is a common issue in many of our countries. Whatever the causes, the child is not responsible for the poverty which can be damaging their lives. Poverty can have serious effects on a child as it can influence their emotional and social development. The causes of poverty can be various -long-term illness, lone parent, poor work skills can prevent many parents from earning a decent wage to live on. . Poverty is the condition of not having the means to afford basic human needs and many children in today’s society are unable to satisfy these basic needs and are below the poverty line. There are so many different causes of child poverty and this essay will outline some the key causes and impacts of child poverty in today’s society. Unemployment is one of the key causes of child poverty. The effects of unemployment is loss of income, housing and lack of career experience. The unemployed people must depend on government benefits to meet their basic needs .(1 )Many families do not claim mean-tested benefits perhaps they do not know what they are entitled to, or they don’t no how, or want to claim benefits .Because of this, children of this group are vulnerable to poverty. There is a real struggle to find employment as a result of the recession .This can have a long term affect on children whose parents have extended periods of unemployment.(2 )Researchers have found that this can lead to behaviour issues , poor academic performance and these effects can last a life-time. Men in unskilled jobs and low-paid jobs are most vulnerable to unemployment and women would make up the vast majority of part-time and low-paid jobs while trying to afford the high rise in childcare costs.
