Child Observation Essay

918 Words4 Pages
Your Observations o Include time, setting, whom you observed, verbal and non-verbal communication and specific events observed o Do not include judgements or interpretations, only describe what you see. For example, if you saw child A grabbing a toy from child B, who in return hit child A, you would not say, “Even though child A was wrong for grabbing the toy, child B had no right to hit child A.” You would describe the facts by saying, “After child A grabbed the toy from child B, child B hit child A.” o Use action verbs and adjectives to describe what you see. For example, the sentence “Scooping up the sand, the girl made big piles” is more vivid than “The girl put the sand into piles.” o Even though the descriptions start off broad, you should narrow it, as you write. For example, a broad description is, “The preschool is located in a Downtown urban city.” To narrow the description, you could say, “Located in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, the preschool, Luv Your Tots, is well-known for its innovative approach to teaching preschool children.” o Complete all charts to the best or your ability. o You will be required to complete the charts twice for both children. To avoid confusion, use four different coloured pens – 2 for one child (1 colour for the first observation and a second colour of the second observation), and do the same for the other child (just in 2 colours different from the first child). o MAKE SURE YOU PROVIDE A LEGEND EXPLAINING WHAT COLOUR REPRESENTS WHO AND WHICH OBSERVATION Child Observation Report Format Your information should be presented in a report format with sections and subsections (See Table of Contents example) Introduction  A concise description of the purpose of the report, the type of observations completed, how it was completed, and a brief depiction of the children who have been observed.
