Week 6 discussion childhood obesity Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. This disease has reached a high in the past few years. Families are choosing more and more unhealthy eating habits. And children are becoming inactive. Schools are trying to help fight this battle by offering new healthy choices for children. We hear it in the media daily that America is becoming fatter and fatter. If one of my children were to come home with a note from the school nurse stating that they exceeded the government guidelines for obesity I would first be concerned. The next thing that I would do is get a second opinion and take my child to his or her pediatrician. As a parent you honestly should know the fact about your child’s health. I used to be considered obese according to my BMI at 191 pounds. Honestly when I saw that I was considered obese I cried and decided to change. For me as an adult being told that I was obese took a toll on me I could only imagine how a child would feel. To be told that my child was at risk for type 2 diabetes would spark my concern even more. Diabetes is a serious disease that if goes untreated could be deadly. Also if goes untreated this disease could cause other problems in a child’s body. “One particularly startling trend is that children who are obese have shown an alarming increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes (Daniels, 2006; Sinha et al., 2002) (Martin & Fabes, 2009, p.352). When talking about childhood obesity and public policy I came across an article, Public Policy to Prevent Childhood Obesity, and the Role of Pediatric Endocrinologist. This article gave an overview of different types of public policies that have been proposed as pieces of the complex solution to the growing problem of childhood obesity.
