Speech- Many people have cancer throughout their lives; it has now reached a point where one third of the population are suffering cancer at some stage during their life. Unfortunately of the 33% who suffer this disease a small minority are children. Even though this disease is becoming increasingly common there are still a large quantity of children who think it is fun to bully and intimidate the few who have suffered this illness. There are also some people who post pictures of children who have had cancer on Facebook, which they only do to get likes.m Bullying and intimidating people with cancer is out of order and we as a society should make sure this doesn’t happen. In one school a 12 year old girl, a survivor of cancer who had under gone extensive chemo and radio therapy was being bullied due to the length of her hair and her height. Quite a few days of the week she would come home crying due to the rude remarks of the children around her, they called her baldy, spazz and midget. Obviously they don’t know what each of these words mean. The last thing this girl needed was to be called names because of the complications of the treatment. She now feels that she has to wear a wig. Surely as a school community they should have supported the child instead of belittling and under mining her confidence. Maybe the reason why children pick on them is because they don’t understand and don’t care what this child has had to endure. I will tell you what they have had to suffer to get rid of this catastrophic illness: endless sleepless nights; living in fear of not seeing another day; being pinned down to a table by a mask so they can undergo radio therapy and being constantly isolated from friends and family and a complete loss of appetite and that’s not even half of it without the psychological side of things.
