Child abuse is defined as causing any harmful or offensive contact with child's body or mistreatment of a child by a parent or a guardian including, beating and sexual molestation. Most people are not aware of the fact that hitting a child is considered a serious crime. As a matter of fact, Abuse of children is more common than most people realize. Why would parents or guardian harm a child? Extreme reaction of parents towards having children, eventually leads to abuse of a child. Different kinds of child abuses are leading to cognitive delays and emotional difficulties. However, Child abuse has not only lead to physical and emotional distress among children between the age group 5-15, but has lead to deterioration of their health and well being. “Child abuse casts a shadow the length of a lifetime”. (Ward /p97). In every country, child abuse is a problem that is centuries old. First case of child abuse occurred in early 1870. When an eight year old orphan girl named Mary Ellen was suffering daily whippings and beatings at her foster home. In early 1884, British government creates the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in an effort to protect children rights. As a consequence, other countries founded suchlike societies, as well. In late 1800s, New York becomes the first state in US, which enforce a law of protecting children. Within few years, other states passed such laws.” Child abuse does not go away, but 90 percent of child abuse is preventable”.(Adams/p113) In early 1960s, child abuse was determined as clinical condition, which could be serious threat to a child. In addition, the federal children’s bureau set up a law with instruction how to report child abuse. By the end of 1970, all 50 states had their own laws to report child abuse.
