Child abuse is still a serious problem in our modern world, which affected the normal development of many children. There were many studies carried out to help reduce the problem but there was still little success. Despite the severe punishments in law for this type of criminal, the number of cases did not decrease during last several years which proved the inefficiency of the approach. Actually, child abuse can be prevented by raising the level of awareness of parents, teachers and community members about the problem. In this research, I will study how this could help to reduce three main types of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse and sexual abuse. The definitions of child abuse vary from state to state but all are based on standards of Federal law. Child abused is defined in The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act as “any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation; or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.” According to this definition, child abuse can be divided into four main types: neglect, physical abuse, psychological maltreatment and sexual abuse. These forms can happen separately or in combination (Child Maltreatment 2009 21). In 2009, statistics shows that neglect is the main type of child abuse with 78.3% of the cases. The proportion of physical abuse, sexual abuse and psychological maltreatment are 17.8%, 9.5% and 7.6%, respectively. Moreover, for that year, more than 3.6 million children were suffered from at least one case (Child Maltreatment 2009 ix). These statistics emphasize the seriousness of the problem.
